Ho meets new Liaison Office Director Zheng

Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng met with Zheng Xincong, the newly appointed director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR, at Government Headquarters yesterday, the Macau Government Information Bureau (GCS) said in a statement said.

According to the statement, Ho and Zheng agreed that they will uphold the excellent tradition of good communication and close cooperation, and continue to work together to safeguard the implementation of the national Constitution and the Macau Basic Law, safeguard the central government’s overall jurisdiction over the MSAR, implement the principle of “patriots administering Macau”, ensure the stability of the application of the “One Country, Two Systems” in Macau, and promote the appropriate diversification of Macau’s economy and seek the well-being of Macau residents.

On behalf of the MSAR, Ho congratulated Zheng on his new appointment, and thanked the central government for its long-term concern for the MSAR and its support for the local administration’s governance in accordance with the law, especially in the fight against the COVID-19 epidemic in Macau, working together to serve Macau residents and respond to social needs, the statement underlined.

The statement quoted Ho as saying during the meeting that the overall situation in Macau is stable and the COVID-19 prevention and control measures have achieved good results. However, Ho pointed out that based on the changes in the epidemic situation in the mainland since early this year, there has been a significant decrease in visitors to Macau. As a result, Ho said, Macau’s economy is facing great difficulties and pressure. In response to actual needs, Ho underlined, the local government continues to launch various assistance measures to relieve residents’ hardships. With the recent alleviation of the epidemic in the mainland, entry-exit prevention and control restrictions are expected to be gradually relaxed, hoping to bring favourable conditions for Macao’s economic recovery, Ho said.

The local government will continue to maintain close contact with the Liaison Office headed by Zheng to work together to maintain the long-term prosperity and stability of the MSAR, Ho said.

According to the statement, Zheng said that during his 10-month tenure as deputy director of the Liaison Office, he deeply appreciated the strong support by Ho and the local government for the work of the Liaison Office.

Zheng stressed that the Liaison Office is committed to sharing the concerns of the MSAR government and jointly doing more practical things for local residents. He emphasised that there has always been close and good communication and cooperation between the Liaison Office and the MSAR government, which is bound to continue, the statement underlined.
