A local man was arrested on Saturday for stealing 73,000 patacas worth of tools on June 7 from a construction site in Zape, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Leng Kam Lon said at a regular press conference yesterday.

Leng said the 32-year-old suspect surnamed Wong is jobless and has a criminal record for theft committed earlier this year.

According to Leng, a construction company reported to the police on June 7 that tools including electrical wires, grinders and electric wrenches stored in a construction container had been stolen, with the lock of the container broken. Another construction company also reported to the police that electrical wires placed outside the site had been stolen. The two construction companies work at the same construction site in Zape, and the stolen tools were worth a total of 73,000 patacas.

Leng said that PJ officers identified Wong as the suspect as he has a criminal record for theft.

According to Leng, the PJ officers could not find Wong in his home and the location where they suspected he would be hiding, but Wong was finally intercepted by Public Security Police (PSP) in Zape on Saturday.

Wong told the police that after he had stolen the tools in the early morning last Tuesday, he used a trolley to take the tools to a building nearby and subsequently caught a taxi to travel to a second-hand construction equipment shop with the tools, Leng said, adding that he sold the tools for 3,200 patacas. Leng said that Wong had already spent all the money, and the PJ officers could not find the stolen tools since the shop had already sold them all.

Wong has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a larceny charge, according to Leng.
