Macao Water said in a statement yesterday that it was again named the “Most Socially Responsible Company” for the 10th consecutive year in the 19th water company appraisal, carried out last year, which was co-organised by think tanks E20 Environment Platform and H2O-China.
The statement quoted Macao Water Executive Director Nacky Kuan Sio Peng as saying during her acceptance speech that water supply utilities have a variety of corporate social responsibilities such as providing safe and high-quality potable water and offering internship and exchange opportunities to young people. She was also quoted in the statement as saying that the award was “a recognition of, and encouragement for, the efforts of all members of staff”, which was driving the company to continuously improve its work.
According to the statement, Macao Water set up its Corporate Responsibility Committee a decade ago and since then has integrated social responsibility concepts into its operational strategy and management measures.
The statement noted examples such as the Seac Pai Van Water Treatment Plant, which was inaugurated last year, supporting the “circular economy, energy efficiency and emission reduction” principles, adding that the plant was awarded the “One-star Certificate of Green Building Design Label”. Besides, the statement noted, Macao Water has been partnering with tertiary institutions to conduct research on improving “energy efficiency of water supply systems”.
The statement pointed out that the company has also joined and supported social charity events, such as sponsoring the sports competitions and routine training of the Macau Special Olympics (MSO) for 18 consecutive years.
Moreover, the statement noted other instances of social responsibility such as paying close attention to the employment of local young people and the career planning of staff, which includes cooperating with Tsinghua University’s School of Environment to create a “Student Practice Base” aiming to promote “in-depth integration between the industrial, academic and research sectors”.
The statement said that the company will continue to work with all stakeholders “to contribute to society with concrete actions, to endeavour to promote awareness and culture of caring for different groups of people, and to contribute to the sustainable development of the city and the country as a whole”.
