The hot weather will continue for another two to three days, while a tropical cyclone brewing near the Philippines will bring storms to Macau over the weekend, the Macau Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) said in a statement yesterday.

According to a statement from the weather station, Macau has been experiencing very hot weather in recent days under the influence of subtropical high pressure, which will gradually fade to the east in the coming days.

The bureau therefore reminded residents, especially those out for the new round of mandatory citywide nucleic acid testing (NAT), to take the necessary precautions and stay hydrated.

The statement also said that a large area of low-pressure located near the Philippines is developing and is expected to enter the South China Sea by the middle of this week.

According to the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), the probability of this low-pressure area forming into a tropical storm stands approximately at 80 to 90 percent and is expected to move towards the coastal areas between Guangdong province and Fujian province over the weekend.

However, the development and track of the low-pressure area will need to be continuously observed, the SMG statement said.

In meteorology, a low-pressure area is an area of lower atmospheric pressure than surrounding locations and is usually associated with severe weather, such as cloudy, windy and possibly rainy or stormy conditions, according to Wikipedia.

Therefore, the bureau said that from the weekend to next week, Macau’s weather will become very cloudy with showers and thunderstorms, and the winds will gradually strengthen.

The bureau also advised people in Macau to stay indoors and to take precautions in the event of strong winds and downpours.

The text says that the probability of a low-pressure area near the Philippines forming into a tropical storm stands at approximately 80 to 90 percent.
