The Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) lowered all tropical cyclone signals at 6 p.m. yesterday, as Typhoon “Chaba” moved further away from Macau.
Macau’s observatory cancelled the Strong Storm Signal No.3 at 6 p.m. yesterday which it had hoisted at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday when it replaced Typhoon Signal No.8 that had been issued at 9:30 p.m. on Friday.
According to the weather station, on Saturday up to 0.50 metres of flooding occurred in the Inner Harbour area between the morning and noon.
The observatory cancelled all Storm Surge warnings at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
Chaba spares Macau
Meanwhile, according to a statement by the Civil Protection Operations Centre (COPC) on Saturday, no major damage or major injuries were reported during the typhoon. However, two people who sustained slight injuries due to the typhoon were admitted to the public Conde de S. Januário Hospital Centre and private Kiang Wu Hospital respectively.
The statement noted that 26 incidents were recorded during the period when Typhoon Signal No.8 was up, including fallen trees, collapsed scaffolding, hanging objects becoming loose, such as signboards, windows, canopies and concrete falling off buildings.
The statement added that the Public Security Police (PSP) handled one case of a cabbie scalping a customer during the typhoon.
According to the statement, the Social Welfare Bureau (IAS) opened four emergency centres during the typhoon, but only five people sought shelter there, while the Wui Ieng Temporary Accommodation Centre in Rua Leste da Ilha Verde remained open during day time, which provided services for 113 people.
The observatory forecasts mainly cloudy weather today with a few thundery showers.
