The Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR) has expressed firm opposition to the so-called concluding observations by the UN Human Rights Committee in Geneva on the implementation of the relevant provisions of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights in Macau.
Certain contents are based on unverified reports or sources of information, and do not align with reality, and the criticism against the human rights situation in Macau is biased and baseless, a spokesperson for the office said today.
Since Macau's return to the motherland on December 20, 1999, the MSAR government has united and led all sectors of society to act in strict accordance with the nation's Constitution and the Basic Law of the MSAR under the leadership of the central government and the strong support of the mainland.
The practice of "One Country, Two Systems" in Macau has achieved universally-recognized success, and Macau has ushered in its best development situation in history. Macau residents enjoy an unprecedented range of rights and freedoms in accordance with the law, which is a fact widely acknowledged by anyone without prejudice, said the spokesperson.
The spokesperson stressed that the Liaison Office will always support the MSAR government in firmly safeguarding the fundamental rights and freedoms enjoyed by Macau residents under the MSAR Basic Law and implementing the relevant provisions of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights in accordance with the Basic Law. – Xinhua, MPD
