A fire broke out in a flat in Tong Wa San Chun Building in Areia Preta district in the wee hours of Saturday, resulting in the evacuation of 20 residents, one of whom was injured, according to a Fire Services Bureau (CB) statement.
According to the statement on Saturday, the bureau received a report at about 1 a.m. on Saturday about the incident. The statement said that firefighters found smoke and flames coming from the sixth-floor windows of the building. The statement noted that firefighters subsequently extinguished the blaze with water and removed the smoke with an extractor fan.
The statement said that five fire engines were dispatched and 20 residents were evacuated during the incident. A 64-year-old local female householder of the unit that caught the fire sustained burns to her left knee, right forearm and back of her right hand while attempting to put out the fire. The statement added that she was in stable condition when she was taken to the private Kiang Wu Hospital for treatment.
The statement added that the walls of the building were blackened. An air purifier, and a pile of sundries in the flat as well as the three outdoor AC condensers were also burnt, the statement said, adding that the incident was suspected to have been caused by a short circuit in one of the condensers.
