Gongbei’s Customs Administration said in a statement yesterday that three local residents were recently stopped by its officers at Qingmao checkpoint and found to be attempting to smuggle a large number of central processing units (CPUs) quartz watch movements and Maotai liquor.

The statement said that a local male resident was intercepted by customs officers at around 12 p.m. on Sunday when entering Zhuhai through the “nothing to declare” channel, adding that 60 CPUs of “Intel Core i5” wrapped in newspaper were found in a infant formula tin, which the man was carrying when passing the checkpoint. The statement noted that there was also cotton wool used as wadding in the tin.

According to the same statement, at around 6 p.m. last Thursday, customs officers stopped a female local resident who was carrying 1,000 quartz watch movements inside two white plastic boxes hidden in her handbag, when she went through the “nothing to declare” channel.

The statement noted that a total of 2,000 quartz watch movements were discovered. The case is under further investigation, the statement added.

Meanwhile, a local man, who was pushing an electric scooter, was intercepted by customs officers when he entered the mainland through the “nothing to declare” channel at Qingmao checkpoint around 12:30 a.m. yesterday, another statement by the customs administration said yesterday, adding that five bottles of Maotai liquor were found in a hidden compartment under the front basket and the deck of the scooter.

That case has been dealt with in accordance with mainland regulations, according to the statement.
