A 74-year-old man was arrested last Sunday for stealing a suitcase from a residential building’s lobby on Avenida de Artur Tamagnini Barbosa, a Public Security Police (PSP) spokesperson said at a regular press conference on Friday.

According to the spokesperson, the local suspect, surnamed Leong, lives in a flat in the same building.

The spokesperson said that the female victim in her thirties reported to the police in the evening of  August 27 that she had gone to visit a friend in the building and left her suitcase in the lobby earlier that day, adding that the luggage had vanished when she returned about half an hour later.

After scrutinising the police forces’ citywide CCTV camera system, the spokesperson said, the Public Security Police identified Leong as the suspect and found the suitcase in a sitting-out area on Avenida do General Castelo Branco in the early morning of last Sunday.

After looking through the contents of the suitcase, the local victim reported to police that apart from some clothes, two bottles of liquor, some beauty products and more than 1,000 yuan and patacas in cash were stolen from the suitcase, resulting in a total loss of about 5,000 patacas, the spokesperson noted.

The spokesperson said that PSP officers intercepted Leong in a flat in the building last Sunday morning, adding that Leong said that he stole the suitcase “in a moment of greed” after seeing the luggage left unattended.

According to the spokesperson, Leong has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), where he faces a theft charge.
