An intoxicated local man vandalised a hotel guestroom registered in his non-resident worker (NRW) girlfriend’s name over a money dispute, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Ho Chan Nam said at a regular press conference yesterday.

Ho said that the 33-year-old suspect surnamed Teng told the police that he’s a chef, while his girlfriend works in a convenience store.

According to Ho, on Friday at 7 p.m. Teng went to his girlfriend’s hotel guestroom while she was working in the convenience store. He started boozing while chatting with her on a messaging app. Ho said that the two then got into a heated argument over money issues, leading Teng to vandalise the room, after which he sent a video to her of him wrecking the room.

Ho said that Teng left the room at 11 p.m. leaving the TV, hair dryer, bathtub and other equipment in the room damaged. His girlfriend returned to the guestroom at 1 a.m. and saw the mess, according to Ho. She immediately reported the incident to hotel staff and then to the police, Ho said, adding the hotel management estimated the damaged property at 51,580 patacas.

Ho said that Teng was apprehended in his flat near the Barrier Gate checkpoint on Saturday. Under questioning, he admitted wrecking the hotel guestroom since he thought that his girlfriend, whom he was upset and vengeful about due to their money row, would need to pay for the damage he had caused. Teng later agreed that he would pay for the damaged hotel property, according to Ho.

Teng has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Officer (MP), facing an aggravated charge of causing property damage, Ho said.
