A mainlander and a Filipina domestic helper were arrested separately for picking up a purse and a 500-pataca note respectively in the street and not handing them in to the authorities, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Leong Chi Seng said at a regular press conference yesterday.

Leong said that the 56-year-old mainlander surnamed Yao, who was in Macau visiting her relatives, told the police that she’s jobless, while the Filipina surnamed Ruzgal is 48 years old.

According to Leong, a female visitor reported to the police on October 3 that earlier that day she had lost her white purse containing HK$22,000 and vouchers worth HK$700 in Avenida Cidade Nova in Cotai. PSP officers scrutinised their citywide CCTV camera system and identified Yao, Leong said, adding that Yao was arrested in a flat in the northern district later that day and police officers retrieved the purse, with the cash and vouchers still inside.

Meanwhile, a person reported to the police on July 22 that he or she lost a 500-pataca note in Rua de Pedro Coutinho. On September 15, Ruzgal was called to the police station where she admitted picking up and keeping the money.

Ruzgal and Yao have been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing theft-by-finding charges, according to Leong.
