A man who robbed a jewellery shop in Zape of two watches last night was later caught by the police nearby, the Public Security Police (PSP) said in a statement.

Nevertheless, according to the statement, the case resulted in two slight injuries, a salesman of the jewellery shop who chased the robber and a student who was a passer-by and joined the chase.

The robbery occurred in a jewellery shop near Hotel Beverly Plaza in Avenida do Dr Rodrigo Rodrigues at around 7 p.m., the statement said.

According to the statement, the robber escaped from the jewellers and ran towards the S. Francisco Barracks. The salesman chased the robber while reporting the case to the police.

When the salesman was chasing the robber through an underpass in Estrada Nova, a short street near the S. Francisco Barracks and the S. Francisco Garden, a student walking past joined the chase, shortly after which the salesman and the student together managed to subdue the robber in the underpass, according to the statement.

At around the same time, the statement said, PSP officers arrived at the scene and arrested the robber. The case has meanwhile been transferred to the Judiciary Police (PJ) for follow-up investigation.

PJ officers also went to the jewellery shop to carry out a follow-up investigation.

According to the statement, the salesman and student told police officers that they had got slightly injured while chasing and subduing robber. Both were taken to hospital by ambulance for treatment.

The statement did not mention whether the robber had any weapons.

Last night’s PSP statement did not give the male robber’s personal details.
