The 9th Oxfam “Towerrun” on Sunday attracted over 450 participants tackling the stairs in Macau Tower, with the aim of raising awareness of the difficulties that poor people are facing due to climate change, an Oxfam statement said on Sunday.

Racers who took up the full-run challenge climbed 1,298 steps from the tower’s ground floor to its adventure deck on the 61st floor, the statement said, adding that the distance equals the distance that a herder in Qinghai needs to tackle in order to find water under the impact of climate change, as well as for those who experience drought in East Africa and need to walk even four times longer than the Towerrun to fetch water.

The statement said that the Sunday event also involved a number of charitable activities such as carnival games, vegetarian bazaars and theatre shows, all of which were aimed at informing the public about climate issues, adding that the income from the sales and donations will be used to help the poor.

Oxfam’s local branch said in a message sent to The Macau Post Daily yesterday evening that the Towerrun raised 490,000 patacas.

Oxfam is a British-founded confederation of 21 independent charitable organisations focusing on the alleviation of global poverty, founded in 1942 and led by Oxfam International.
