The Judiciary Police (PJ) said in a statement that they were notified by the public Conde de S. Januário Hospital Centre at 11 a.m. yesterday that a 35-year-old non-resident worker (NRW), who sustained a chest contusion in a work accident on the Galaxy Macau Phase 4 construction site in Cotai on Sunday, passed away after emergency treatment earlier in the day.
According to the statement, the male victim is surnamed Zhou. It did not reveal the victim’s nationality.
The statement noted that Zhou was operating a cherry picker (mobile elevating work platform) on the site at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday when he was caught between the cherry picker and a crossbeam during the ascent of the cherry picker, so his workmate nearby immediately called for help and his superior called the police.
The statement said that his workmates cut the cherry picker’s lifting arm and rescued the victim before Fire Services Bureau (CB) paramedics arrived at the scene, adding that as Zhou was not breathing and had no sign of a heartbeat, he was immediately rushed to the public hospital for emergency treatment.
At 10:45 a.m. yesterday Zhou’s health suddenly deteriorated, and he died shortly afterwards.
According to a preliminary examination, Zhou sustained multiple abrasions to the neck, chest and right upper arm, as well as fractures to the thoracic vertebrae.
The statement pointed out that the Judiciary Police have classified the case as dead body found. The exact cause of death still needed to be confirmed by a forensic examination, the statement added.
