The Macao Catholic Cultural Association (ACCM) said in a recent statement that it is presenting “Illustratio: Macao’s Catholic Intangible Cultural Heritage & Liturgical Feast Illustration Exhibition and New Book Release”, aiming to further raise public awareness of the topics.
According to Wikipedia, liturgy is defined as “the customary public ritual of worship performed by a religious group”. Meanwhile, according to the statement, illustration is derived from the Latin word ilustratio, which is defined as “to enlighten”. lllustration art’s development has had a long history, and the statement noted that in the West its earliest history can be found in religious manuscripts, adding that the Glad Tidings’ universality has always been translated to art by the Catholic Church.
The association, the statement underlined, hopes to present the historical and cultural significance of 15 “key Catholic intangible cultural heritage & liturgical feasts of the Catholic Diocese of Macao” through the work of the association’s in-house illustrator.
The statement noted that Catholicism has been in Macau for over 400 years and “has always been an important meeting point of Chinese and Western cultures”. Moreover, Macau contains centuries of Catholic history and traditions that are important cultural heritage and are “significant contributions” to the local community. The statement said that the long-term collective experiences provide “certain distinctive characteristics” to the Catholic Church in Macau and the faith.
