A taxi driver was caught speeding three times in Avenida da Amizade—part of the Grand Prix Guia Circuit—with three passengers on board, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Cheuk Kou Chi said at a press conference yesterday.

Cheuk said the male suspect surnamed Chao is in his thirties.

According to Cheuk, the police discovered online on October 16 a video circulating on a mainland social media website showing a taxi speeding on the Grand Prix race track. Scrutinising their city-wide CCTV camera system, the police identified the taxi speeding three times in the wee hours of October 16, reaching speeds of over 100 km/h.

The speed limit in Avenida da Amizade is 60 km/h.

Chao, the taxi driver, was called to a police station last Wednesday. Under questioning, he admitted speeding at the request of his three male passengers because they wanted to “go for a ride”, Cheuk said, adding that Chao claimed he had not noticed that he had been speeding.

Chao has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a dangerous driving charge, Cheuk said.
