Macau's observatory hoisted Tropical Cyclone Signal No. 8 at 9:30 p.m. today.
According to a statement by the Macau Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG), at 9 p.m. Tropical Storm Nalgae was located 120 km southeast of Macau, moving towards the west of the Pearl River Delta.
"This means that the tropical cyclone continues to approach Macao. Winds with sustained speed of 63 to 117 km/h are expected or blowing and gusts may exceed 180 km/h in Macau," the weather station said.
Signal No. 8 has replaced Signal No. 3, which had been hoisted at 3 a.m. yesterday, following the hoisting of Standby Signal No. 1 on Monday.
Signal No. 8 is Macau's third-highest typhoon warning.
Public bus and light rail services as well as school classes are suspended during Signal No. 8. Banks, government offices as well as most private businesses including restaurants are closed as long as Signal No. 8 is hoisted.
Nalgae killed at least 110 people in the Philippines earlier this week, according to newswire reports.
