A mainlander was arrested after gambling away HK$190,000 borrowed from another mainlander and refusing to repay, as both had agreed beforehand, half of it, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chong Kam Leong said during a press conference yesterday.

Chong identified the suspect as a 27-year-old man surnamed Shi. He told the police he’s jobless.

According to Chong, when the victim in his twenties was gambling in a casino in Zape on Monday, Shi approached him and claimed that he’s a “gambling master” and could help him win at gambling. Believing him, the victim gave him HK$190,000, while Shi promised that if he lost the money gambling, he would repay him half the sum.

Shi later invited two more “gambling masters” and they sat down at a table in the casino and started gambling at 3 p.m. until finishing at 4 a.m. the next day, losing all the money. The victim then demanded Shi return half the money but the trio refused. The four got into a heated argument and security guards were alerted, after which Shi and the victim were taken to a police station while the other two “gambling masters” fled the scene.

Shi has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a fraud charge, Chong said.
