Macau recorded over 55,000 visitor arrivals on Saturday, among whom 44,025 were from the mainland and 10,084 from Hong Kong, accounting for the highest single-day number of arrivals since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) statement yesterday.
Macau confirmed its first novel coronavirus case on January 22, 2020.
In the past week of January 7-13, a total of 261,346 visitor arrivals were recorded, representing an average daily number of 37,335, an increase of 80.40 percent over the week of December 31 to January 6 which recorded an average daily number of 20,693, an increase of 189.20 percent over the average daily number of 12,909 last month.
Meanwhile, an MGTO statement on Saturday noted that local hotel guestrooms’ average occupancy rate from January 6 to last Thursday reached 67.40 percent, up 15.40 percentage points week on week from 52 percent, representing an increase of 24.30 percentage points compared to last month.
In December 2019, the last full month before COVID-19 began to affect Macau, the daily average number of visitor arrivals stood at 99,465. In February 2020, the first full months of the pandemic’s impact on Macau, the daily average number of visitor arrivals stood at just 5,393.
