The Macau Museum of Art (MAM) is holding an exhibition titled “Scenes of Life: Modern Paintings from the MAM Collection”, which features 60 works by 47 artists.

A statement from the museum noted that it has been collecting modern paintings from exhibitions, donations and award-winners, among others, since 1999, creating a “valuable modernist collection”.

Displaying works from its collection, the statement said that the exhibition comprises two sections, with 39 landscapes and 21 figurative paintings.

With works including oil and acrylic paintings, mixed media and sculptures, the statement said that the different works showcase various formats and diversified styles and techniques that demonstrate the “open-mindedness and artistic flair resulting from the co-existence of Chinese and Western cultures” in Macau.

The exhibition’s theme, according to the statement, attempts to present the combination of Chinese and Western aesthetics and philosophy, as well as “artistic spirits” such as sensibility, imagery and mentality.

The exhibits also try to highlight some of the traits of modernist works such as using artistic approaches of refining, simplifying or exaggerating real objects, and “exploring light and colour in order to reach their intrinsic beauty and using abstract settings to express spiritual moods and temperaments”.

The exhibition runs until May 5. The museum is open daily, except Mondays, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., with the last entry at 6:30 p.m. For more details, visit http://www.mam.gov.mo/c/index
