Vehicular traffic in the southern area of the Inner Harbour district is being affected as the second phase of the government’s ongoing construction of a rainwater pumping station and box culverts there, which also includes improvements to the rainwater drainage network, began yesterday.

The project is being carried out in three phases in total. The first phase got off the ground late last year.

During a press conference on Friday, officials acknowledged that the pressure on traffic is expected to continue to rise at a later stage as the project goes ahead.

The first phase of the project, which is slated to be completed in June next year, is a rainwater pumping station on the waterfront near The Riviera Macau residential building.

According to the website of the Public Works Bureau (DSOP), the project’s second phase, which is slated to be completed in December next year, is building box culverts, as well as installing new rainwater drains and sewer pipes between the new rainwater pumping station and the Maritime Training School, which is located near A-Ma Temple.

Due to the ongoing second phase of the project, a street near the Riviera Macau residential building has been closed to traffic since yesterday.

Officials said during Friday’s press conference that the suspension of traffic in the street will run until June 10 this year.

The officials also said that the project’s third phase is expected to get off the ground in the first half of this year. According to the officials, the impact on traffic could be expected to further increase after the third phase starts. The third phase is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2025, the officials said.

According to the DSOP website, the project’s third phase will build a sewer pumping station near Praça de Ponte e Horta (known in Cantonese as Si Ta Hau – “City Entrance”), as well as installing box culverts and new rainwater drains and sewer pipes between the new rainwater pumping station near the Riviera Macau residential building, and the junction of Rua das Lorchas and Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro (aka San Ma Lou in Cantonese – “New Road”).
