The Fire Services Bureau (CB) recorded 43 cases of carbon monoxide poisoning last year, the Secretariat for Security (GSS) said in a statement last week.

The statement, which was released on the GSS website last week, did not announce the changes in the number of such cases between 2021 and last year.

The statement said that most of the carbon monoxide poisoning cases recorded in “recent years” were due to “improper” use of gas water heaters that are even equipped with an exhaust pipe.

The statement also pointed out that a carbon monoxide poisoning case that occurred early this year resulted in three fatalities.

The fatal case occurred in a residential flat in the city centre on Chinese New Year’s Eve, January 21.

Fatal carbon monoxide poisoning cases are rare in Macau.

The statement also pointed out that the Macau government banned the import of flueless gas water heaters in 2010, banned their sales in 2017, and banned their installations in 2021.
