Post and Telecommunications Bureau (CTT) Director Lau Wai Meng said yesterday that 150,000 people in Macau are using the 5G service.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of yesterday’s General Union of Neighbourhood Associations of Macau’s (UGAMM) 39th anniversary celebration, Lau underlined that the unit price – price per unit in terms of data usage – of 5G is lower than that of 4G, and local telecom operators have also launched a string of service plans with different prices for different customer groups, which she believed would meet users’ need for the time being.

Two telecom operators, CTM and China Telecom (Macau), were each granted a 5G licence by the local government in early November. CTM commenced its 5G service in November, while China Telecom (Macau) Company Limited started its 5G service in December.

In addition, Macau Basic Television Channels Limited will adjust some of its Basic TV channels starting from 11 a.m. on Monday. Lau reminded the public watching the Basic TV Channels to re-scan the list of TV programmes on their TV sets in order to be able to continue receiving the programmes normally.

Lau said the adjustment was due to the launch of the city’s 5G service, which could interfere with some TV signals, adding she hoped that the public would cooperate in re-scanning the list of TV programmes on their TV sets.
