The Public Security Police (PSP) and Transport Bureau (DSAT) said in a joint statement yesterday that they will continue to crack down on violations perpetrated by taxi drivers, so as to ensure consumer rights and residents and tourists’ safety, aiming to protect Macau’s tourism image.

According to the statement, during tomorrow’s Ching Ming Festival and Easter holidays, more PSP officers will be dispatched to patrol the city’s border checkpoints, hotels, entertainment venues and tourism attractions, while DSAT staff members will be stationed at taxi ranks to maintain public order and relieve passenger flows there, as well as to provide, if needed, passengers with a channel for complaints about alleged taxi violations.

In order to protect the rights and interests of passengers and taxi drivers, the statement said, taxi management system service providers are required to ensure the roadworthiness of their vehicles.

Those who encounter any taxi violations such as refusal of carriage, price haggling or overcharging can call the PSP Traffic Department on 2837 4214, while those with complaints about taxi drivers’ service attitude can contact the bureau by calling 8866 6363 by providing basic information such as date, time, location, taxi licence plate number and the taxi driver’s licence number.

The statement underlined that under the new law regulating the city’s taxi sector that took effect in 2019, if a taxi driver commits serious taxi violations four times within five years, his or her taxi driver’s licence will be revoked, and he or she will only be eligible for reexamination after three years.

This year’s Easter holiday runs from this coming Friday through next Monday.
