Macau recorded 38 “very hot” days last year, nearly seven more than in 2021, the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) said in a statement yesterday.

According to the statement, Macau’s maximum temperature in July last year reached 37.4 ºC, an increase of 1.6º C over the record for 2021.

The statement noted last year recorded 38 days with a maximum temperature of 33º C or above and 43 days with a minimum temperature of 12º C or below, 6.7 and 3.9 days more than the climatological norm for 1991-2020.

According to the bureau’s definition, a “very hot” day denotes a day with a maximum temperate at or above 33º C.

According to the statement, the total billed tap water consumption decreased by 3.5 percent year-on-year, with a 1.1 percent and 6.5 percent decrease in billed tap water consumption for the domestic and commercial sectors respectively, and a 0.7 percent increase in tap water consumption for the government sector.

The amount of special and hazardous waste increased by 32.7 percent, the statement said, adding that the total amount of construction waste sent to the city’s landfills was 2.33 million cubic metres, a decrease of 16.5 per cent.

The statement noted that Macau’s population density stood at 20,300 people per square kilometre at the end of last year, down from 20,620 people per square kilometre in 2021.

Macau’s land area increased by 0.3 sq. km year on year to 33.3 sq. km at the end of last year, with the addition of the land area of Zone C. Some two-thirds of Macau’s land area has been reclaimed from the sea since the 19th century.

There were six tropical cyclones in 2022, four of which were signal number 8, the statement said.
