The Cultural Affairs Bureau’s (IC) Exhibitions and Museum Department representative Lou Ho Ian announced yesterday that this year’s “Macao International Museum Day Carnival”, jointly organised by the city’s 20 museums, will take place on May 14 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Macau Science Centre in Nape.
Lou, who is also director of the Macau Museum, made the remarks during a press conference at the Macau Grand Prix Museum in Zape about a string of events that will take place to celebrate International Museum Day.
The annual International Museum Day, which was designated by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) in 1977, is commemorated on May 18, aiming to draw the public’s attention to museums and to promote the sustainable development of cultural undertakings and museums.
Themed “Museums, Sustainable Development and Wellbeing”, the upcoming event will feature more than 15 online and offline activities such as painting competitions, game booths, workshops and guided tours, which will be held by the Macau Grand Prix Museum, Tung Sin Tong Historical Archives Exhibition Hall and Maritime Museum, among others, aiming to enhance interactions between the museums and the public and deepen the connection between the museums and community while contributing to social wellbeing, according to Lou.
She added that representatives of some museums in Guangdong and Hong Kong have been invited to participate in the carnival on May 14 this year.
Lou said she expected about 1,200 attendees to the carnival, adding that as the event this year is taking place indoors, about 390,000 patacas has been set aside for the entire event, which is down 170,000 patacas from last year.
In addition to hosting a string of celebratory activities next month, according to a statement handed out during the press conference, the 20 museums will be open free of charge at designated times in May, such as the Macau Grand Prix Museum on May 18.
The “Macao International Museum Day Carnival 2023 Online Game” will be available from May 14 to June 3, during which members of the public can enter the game page by scanning its QR code and complete the task to enter the lucky draw.

Meanwhile, when asked by the media whether the number of admissions to each museum has increased since travel curbs have been gradually eased since the beginning of this year, taking the Macau Museum as a reference, Lou said, there have been about 140,000 visitors so far this year, an increase of 4.6 times compared with the same period last year.
