The Macao Catholic Culture Association (ACCM) said in a statement yesterday that it will organise a series of “Ave Maria” Catholic cultural activities throughout May.

The Catholic Church has set aside the entire month of May to honour Mary, Mother of God, for centuries, the statement noted.

“Ave Maria” is Latin for “Hail Mary”.

The statement underlined that the Litaniae Lauretanae Art Exhibition will be held from this Saturday through May 31 at the Macau Catholic Culture Association on Rua Formosa, showcasing the Catholic Diocese of Macau’s Marian art collection, including ancient 16th-century oil paintings.

According to the statement, the Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Litaniae Lauretanae) is among the “most revered ancient prayers of the Church to honour the Blessed Virgin Mary”.

Four workshops will be held throughout the period, the statement noted, with the first being two sessions of the “Ave Maria Garden Workshops” by Hong Kong Catholic charity organisation “Ave Maria Garden”, which will be held on May 20.

On May 27, two sessions of the “Rosary Workshops” will be led by Miranda Ho, an experienced instructor in rosary making, the statement said. Participants will learn how to make a rosary using Jerusalem olive wood, according to the statement, and learn the “true meaning of rosary praying”.

Moreover, “A Mystical Rose” Sacred Music Recital will be held on May 28 from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. at St Joseph’s Seminary Church (Entrance in Rua do Seminário).  The concert will feature various Marian hymns performed by young local artists Vivian Ng Wai Hang (soprano) and Lao Sam In (organist).

The statement said that the concert’s highlight will be the world premiere of Stabat Mater Dolorosa, composed especially for “A Mystical Rose” Sacred Music Recital by St. Pius X Music Academy in Macao’s Resident Composer Viola Yuen (阮慧玲), who is a council member of the Hong Kong Composers Guild.
