In celebration of the nation’s May Fourth Youth Day, a flag-raising ceremony was held yesterday morning at Macao Polytechnic University (MPU), with a total of 1,200 youth representatives from non-tertiary and tertiary institutions in Macau in attendance, the Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ) said in a statement yesterday.

Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Elsie Ao Ieong U, DSEDJ Director Kong Chi Meng, Central People’s Government Liaison Office Deputy Director Yan Zhichan and other officials from the local and central governments attended yesterday’s flag-raising ceremony, according to the statement.

The statement said that the flag-raising activity aimed to improve local young students’ understanding of the “May Fourth” spirit, complete with a series of events to mark the May Fourth Youth Day.

A three-year member of the student flag-raising team, surnamed Lau, told reporters on the sidelines of the event he felt a sense of mission and hoped that the May Fourth spirit would be passed on to the next generation, so that everyone could feel the spirit of patriotism.

Wong, who was also a flag-raiser, said he was honoured to have received the flag-raising training to gain a good understanding of the national flag and the national anthem.

Another student surnamed Hong, also a member of the flag-raising team, said he felt a great sense of responsibility and was excited to take part.

According to the Wikipedia, Youth Day (Chinese: 五四青年節) is celebrated annually on May 4, in honour of young people aged 14 and older. It was set up to commemorate the 1919 May Fourth Movement, a cultural and anti-imperialist political movement which grew out of student protests in Beijing on May 4, 1919.
