Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Ho Chan Nam said during a regular press conference on Wednesday that a local woman in her seventies fell for a “guess who I am” scam, resulting in a loss of 120,000 patacas.
According to Ho, the victim received a call in early March from a Putonghua-speaking man who sounded like her son-in-law living in Hong Kong, claiming that “he was arrested in Macau for attacking someone”, asking the victim to lend him 120,000 patacas for compensation to the injured party.
Ho said that the victim followed the instructions of her “son-in-law” to withdraw HK$80,000 and 40,000 patacas, which was then handed over to the “son-in-law’s friend” in Praça de Ponte e Horta in the Inner Harbour area.
The scam did not come to light until last Thursday when the victim called her daughter and son-in-law who live in Hong Kong, Ho added.
