The annual China Science and Technology Summit, hosted by the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) in conjunction with The Association for Promotion of Science and Technology of Macau (MAPST) and the INNOVATION CHINA consortium, took place at the University of Macau (UM) yesterday.

Themed “Innovation Drives Macau’s Economic Diversification”, the one-day event brought together government officials, experts and scholars in relevant fields from the mainland and Macau to discuss the opportunities and practices of Macau’s technology industry through keynote speeches, summit dialogues, parallel forums and special roadshows, among others, aiming to help Macau achieve economic diversification.

During yesterday’s opening ceremony, Zhang Guihua, a member of the Leading Party Members’ Group and executive secretary of the Secretariat of CAST, said in a video speech that the summit was a platform where talents were brought together to contribute to boosting Macau’s economic diversification.

Zhang also said he hoped that participants “can take this opportunity to think and share their ideas” of setting up a regular disclosure mechanism between top scientists [in the mainland] and Macau through in-depth cooperation with Macau’s government and the Executive Committee of the Guangdong-Macau In-depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin to promote collaboration between enterprises of the two places, enabling scientific and technological talents, “especially young talents”, to better assist Macau in its appropriate economic diversification drive while, at the same time, encouraging more scientists to join and to give “strong support” to Macau’s scientific innovation.

Regarding the local government adopting its “1+4” model as a core strategy to promote the city’s appropriate economic diversification, Economic and Technological Development Bureau (DSEDT) Director Tai Kin Ip said in a speech during the ceremony that the high-tech industry is an essential part of it.

Tai also said he believed that the summit would help build technology demonstrations and share experiences for all sectors of industry, academia and research, and promote the integration and transformation of more innovative resources and key elements in Macau.

Meanwhile, one of the three invited keynote speakers, Prof. Ben U Seng Pan, who is the founding council president of the Macau Institute of Industrial Technology (MIIT) and the Macau Association of Microelectronics (MAM) and chairman of the Macau Industry-University-Research Collaboration Association, told reporters on the sidelines of the event that the cooperation zone’s industry and talent development policies, combined with Macau’s upcoming system of attracting qualified human resources from outside the city, which will take effect on July 1, were the “biggest” advantage in attracting talents.

The development of Macau’s technology industry requires more qualified and experienced professionals, according to U, whose keynote speech focused on building a bridgehead to promote global cooperation in the semiconductor industry through the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area (GBA).
