A mainland currency exchange dealer has been arrested for short-changing a woman out of HK$22,000, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Lam Keong said yesterday at a regular press conference.
The 50-year-old suspect surnamed Zhou told the police he’s jobless.
According to Lam, on Saturday morning the female victim met Zhou in Avenida Marginal Flor de Lótus who claimed to be able to exchange currency for her. The two struck a deal and the victim received HK$55,000 in cash for 49,000 yuan (55,600 patacas) that she paid online. Later, the victim discovered that she had only been given HK$33,000 and reported the case to the police.
The police intercepted Zhou on the same day in Travessa da Cordoaria. He admitted to short-changing the victim while she was focused on making the online transfer.
The suspect has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a fraud charge, according to Lam.
