The government has announced that a fair comprising 15 stalls at a revitalised area of Coloane’s Lai Chi Vun shipyards area will start operating at the end of this month.

The Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) made the announcement in a statement on Thursday.

The statement indicated that the government’s first-phase revitalisation of Coloane’s Lai Chi Vun shipyards area will open to members of the public at the end of this month.

The first-phase revitalisation project, covering the five plots of X11, X12, X13, X14 and X15 in the area, got off the ground last year.

The Lai Chi Vun shipyards area was listed as a cultural heritage site in 2018.

There were initially about 16 shipyards in Lai Chi Vun Village, but several of them had previously collapsed. The Marine and Water Bureau (DSAMA) also demolished two badly dilapidated shipyards in 2017, so there are now about a dozen old shipyards remaining in the village, but many of them are in a tumbledown condition as well.

The bureau said last month that the first-phase revitalisation project of the Lai Chi Vun shipyards area, covering the five plots of X11, X12, X13, X14 and X15, had been “basically” completed. The bureau reaffirmed last month that the first-phase revitalisation was slated to open to the public at the end of June or early July.

The bureau said earlier this year that the revitalisation will feature spaces showcasing Macau’s traditional shipbuilding industry, a performance stage, spaces for workshops, and other leisure elements.

Thursday’s statement said that the revitalised Lai Chi Vun shipyards area will have a fair every Friday, Saturday and Sunday as well as on public holidays, adding that the fair will start operating at the end of this month.

According to the statement, the fair will open between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. There will be 15 stalls displaying and selling souvenirs with cultural characteristics of Coloane, as well as cultural and creative products and special snacks, the statement said.

The ongoing online application period for those intending to run a stall at the Lai Chi Vun fair, which started on Thursday, will run until 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday.

Only local residents can apply to run a stall. The online application can be made at: www.LaiChiVun.com/Reg_e in the English version. Details about the regulations on the operations of the stalls are also available on this website.

According to the website, the stalls will be set up on the X13 and X14 plots.
