The University of Macau (UM) awarded the Teaching Excellence Award to its Faculty of Business Administration’s (FBA) Department of Integrated Resort and Tourism Management Assistant Professor Fiona Yang Xi, for the 2022/2023 academic year during the university’s Congregation on Saturday, according to a UM statement from the same day.
The award recognises one faculty member with an outstanding teaching performance, with the selection committee choosing from nominees, who are faculty-level teaching award recipients, through a rigorous process, according to the statement.
The selection criteria include teaching philosophy, depth of knowledge in the subject area, and innovative approach to teaching and learning, the statement noted.
The statement said that Yang was grateful for the award and for UM’s acknowledgement of her teaching efforts, adding that her teaching philosophy and approach boils down to experience management, a key concept originating from the service industry and aims to “foster a dynamic and engaging learning environment that remains with students long after they leave the campus”.
Yang joined the university as an assistant professor of the department in 2019. The statement added that she earned her bachelor’s and PhD degrees from Peking University (PKU) and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), respectively.
She has published over 30 academic papers and has won different awards. She currently serves on the editorial board of Journal of Travel Research and Tourism Analysis, according to the statement.
