A 25-year-old local man, claiming to be a real estate agent, sneaked a phone into an empty glove box, and filmed females using the toilet, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Kam Ka Kit said during a regular press conference on Friday.
According to Kam, the real estate agent, surnamed Cheok, learnt how to secretly videotape others, so he fashioned a device using his smartphone and a glove box with a small hole on top of it. Kam said that last Sunday at 10 p.m. a female staff member of a restaurant in Fai Chi Kei reported to the police that she found a suspicious box on the floor of the women’s toilet. Kam said that the woman saw a small hole in the box and suspected that someone had been filming in the toilet. Kam said that when the police arrived at the scene, the officers noticed one of the restaurant customers’ suspicious behaviour and arrested him at the scene. Kam noted that the police officers found 29 video recordings that were taken using the same method.
Kam said that Cheok admitted that he had been surreptitiously taking videos of females using the same method since September last year. Kam pointed out that he took videos of females using the toilet at multiple restaurants and his work place. Kam said that according to the suspect, he did it to release stress and “satisfy his sexual needs”. Kam said that PSP officers had been able to contact two of the victims from his videos.
Cheok has been transferred to the Public Prosecution Office (MP), facing a charge of violating people’s privacy, Kam said.
According to Article 186 of the Macau Penal Code, violating a person’s privacy is punishable by up to two years behind bars, or a fine.
