The Macau Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) has organised a five-day Opportunities and Development – Macau MICE Cooperation Promotion and Exchange Conference – MICE Environment Experience Tour, which began on Monday, facilitating over 400 business matching sessions between 27 companies from the MICE industry and 168 mainland and international buyers.

The event ends today.

IPIM Executive Director Sam Lei Chou Sam told reporters at Macau Tower yesterday that during the event IPIM had arranged for 40 potential MICE organisers and buyers from the mainland to tour a range of Macau MICE hardware and software facilities and tourism resources, with the aim of promoting Macau as an “ideal” MICE destination.

Lei said that IPIM was planning to hold 35 MICE events in Macau in July and August, with over 240,000 attendees expected and 1,000 professional conferences to be involved. Lei pointed out that the second half of the year is the peak season for MICE, adding he was confident that the target of 1,000 MICE events this year will be met.

Li Xiao, a representative from the mainland’s convention and exhibition industry, told reporters that Macau has changed a lot in recent years, with more diversified experiences, adding he believes that Macau has the advantage and competitiveness as a short- and medium-haul destination and can play a role in the globalisation of corporate brands by serving as a gateway to mainland China.

A representative of a local company that runs an indoor skydiving operation, Sean Own, said that the event was good for business negotiations and that he felt that Macau’s economy was recovering and moving in a positive direction.
