The Judiciary Police (PJ) urged members of the public in a statement on Friday to beware of renovation scams, noting that quite a few residents have filed complaints with them on the matter.
According to the statement, the residents employed workers through online platforms to renovate their homes and solve leakage problems. However, upon the start of the renovations, the statement noted, the workers “used various excuses” to significantly increase the price, such as increasing materials’ prices and claiming the need to buy more materials.
The statement said that the workers then refused to follow up on the projects, leading victims to suspect that they were cheated.
With similar cases also having occurred late last year, the statement reminded members of the public to only hire Macau-registered construction companies to conduct renovation work.
The Judiciary Police also urged residents to “never readily trust online information and always to sign contracts detailing all the terms and conditions before work commences”, the statement pointed out.
Residents may call PJ’s crime report hotline on 993 or the anti-scam hotline on 88007777 upon suspecting that they have been defrauded, extorted, or victimised in other ways, according to the statement.
