The Zhuhai Youth Symphony Orchestra (ZHYO), Hong Kong String Orchestra, the choir and orchestra from the Zhuhai No.1 High School and Macau Youth Symphony Orchestra (MYSO) performed in a joint concert at the Huafa & CPAA Grand Theatre in Zhuhai on Sunday.
The concert provided 150 complimentary tickets to the public, allowing them to enjoy the music of the youth performers.
The Macau Post Daily published an interview with ZHYO conductor Tony Yeh Cheng-Te last Wednesday.
The concert began with an emotional rendition of “He Liang Zhu • Butterfly Lovers” by the Zhuhai No. 1 Middle School String Orchestra. This was followed by a rendition of “Seventy Six Trombones” by the middle school’s Wind Orchestra, and the full orchestra concluded the opening set with the first suite of “Chinese Sights and Sounds.”
The first half of the concert ended with the first movement of the Unfinished Symphony by Franz Schumann, performed by the Macau Youth Symphony Orchestra.
In the second half of the concert, the Hong Kong String Orchestra brought Handel’s Passacaglia, Richard Meyer’s Mantras and the traditional folk song “Dance of the Yao People” to the audience. Subsequently, the Zhuhai Youth Symphony Orchestra performed an arranged version of tunes from The Sound of Music by Rodgers and Hammerstein, Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake Suite No. 1 Scène and a choral song named Jinzhao (今朝– “This Morning”).
Huafa Music released a statement yesterday saying that the concert’s objective was to foster cultural exchange and integration among young musicians, promoting the Greater Bay Area’s (GBA) collective development and prosperity.
The GBA consists of nine cities in Guangdong province, including Zhuhai, and the nation’s two special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macau.
