A man from the mainland and a local woman have been arrested for their alleged involvement in a sham marriage, where the man pledged that he would pay a total of HK$250,000 for the bogus marriage deal, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Wong Wai Chon said at a regular press conference yesterday.
The 55-year-old male suspect is surnamed Wang, while the 61-year-old female suspect is surnamed Wong. Both claimed to be jobless.
According to the spokesman, when investigating a case involving the provision of illegal accommodation, police found that the marital status of Wang, the manager of the facility, was suspicious as Wang lived in Zhuhai while Wong lived in Macau. The police summoned them to a police station for questioning on Sunday.
The duo admitted the offence and told the police that they met in 2018. A year later Wang offered to pay Wong HK$250,000 for a fake marriage, so that he could visit Macau frequently on family reunion grounds.
Wang and Wong got married in January, when Wang paid HK$130,000 to Wong, after which he started paying Wong HK$5,000 per month for the deal.
The duo have been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing sham marriage charges.
