The Macao Museum will host two parent-child workshops on Dragon’s Beard Candy making on August 26 to further promote Macau’s intangible cultural heritage skills to the public, the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) said in a statement yesterday.
The activities are free of charge and welcome all members of the public, the statement said.
Dragon’s Beard Candy (龍鬚糖) is a handmade traditional art initiated in China. It is similar to the West’s cotton candy.
Dragon Beard Candy is a traditional sweet known by virtually every family in Macau, which has been inscribed on the list of Macau’s Intangible Cultural Heritage since 2020, the statement noted.
With maltose and flour as raw materials and peanuts and other nuts and sesame seeds as a filling, Dragon Beard Candy is made by twisting, drawing, and shaping, which takes a long time to accumulate experience and perfect the kneading technique to become skilled.
According to the statement, the workshops will invite Kenny Yuen (阮銀釗), the founder of Macau Yau Kei Dragon’s Beard Candy, to explain the production technique and demonstrate the process of making dragon beard candy. Participants can experience this traditional sweet making technique.
The two workshops will start on August 26 at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Gift Shop of the Macao Museum, the statement said, adding that both workshops will be conducted in Cantonese.
Interested individuals can register for the workshop via Macao One Account mobile app before August 20, and if the number of applicants exceeds the designated quota, a lucky draw by computer will be held. Successful candidates will be notified by SMS. Enquiries can be made at 8394 1231 during office hours.
