Macau’s population rose by 5,200 between the first and the second quarter to 678,800, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) announced yesterday.

A DSEC statement attributed the increase “mainly to a rise in the number of non-resident workers living in Macau.”

Macau’s population comprises permanent and non-permanent residents as well as non-resident workers.

Females accounted for 53.3 percent of the population at the end of June.

Based on Macau’s land area of 33.3 square kilometres at the end of June, the special administrative region’s population density amounted to 20,384 per square kilometre at that time, one of the world’s highest.

A total of 920 live births were delivered in the second quarter. The sex ratio at birth stood at 105.8, i.e., 105.8 male babies per 100 female babies.

In the first half of the year, 1,907 live births were recorded, down by 258 year on year.

Mortality decreased by 616 quarter to quarter to 604 in the second quarter. The top three underlying causes of death were tumours (214), diseases of the circulatory system (140) and diseases of the respiratory system (96).

Mortality in the first quarter still included scores of people who died from or with COVID-19, according to medical sources.

In the first half of the year, mortality totalled 1,824, an increase of 568 year on year.
