Macau recorded around 139,000 visitor arrivals on Saturday, the highest daily post-COVID-19 pandemic number, the Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) said in an email yesterday in reply to a query by The Macau Post Daily.

Before Saturday (August 12) when about 139,000 visitor arrivals were recorded, Macau’s highest daily post-pandemic number of visitor arrivals stood at around 133,000, recorded on April 30 this year, according to previously released official data.

April 30 was the second day of the mainland’s five-day Labour Day “Golden Week” holiday.

Macau confirmed its first novel coronavirus case on January 22, 2020.

The MGTO email said that Macau enjoyed a “good” performance in the number of visitor arrivals last month, adding that the daily average number of visitor arrivals was continuing to increase this month compared to last month.

In the first seven months of this year, the MGTO email said, the city recorded around 14.42 million visitor arrivals, representing a daily average of around 68,000 visitor arrivals.

The MGTO email said that the daily average of about 68,000 visitor arrivals during the first seven months of this year represented 63 percent of the daily average number of visitor arrivals recorded in the whole of 2019.

Macau recorded 39.4 million visitor arrivals in the pre-pandemic year of 2019, representing an average of 107,962 visitor arrivals daily.

In December 2019, Macau’s last full pre-COVID-19 pandemic month, the daily average number of visitor arrivals stood at 99,465.

The Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) is scheduled to announce last month’s number of visitor arrivals tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the email also said that the city’s average occupancy rate of hotel guestrooms stood at 83 percent during the first seven months of this year, which was only 7.8 percentage points lower than the 90.8 percent recorded in the whole of 2019.

The email said that the city recorded an average occupancy rate of hotel guestrooms of over 94 percent between August 4 and last Thursday.
