A local woman in her eighties has fallen for a “guess who I am” scam and lost a total of 20,000 patacas, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokeswoman Lei Hon Nei said in a regular press conference on Monday.
According to Lei, on August 8 the victim received a phone call from a man who claimed to be her “friend” and requested a loan of 20,000 patacas for “emergency use”. Believing it to be true, the victim followed the instructions and transferred the money to a designated bank account. Lei noted that there was no further contact between them afterwards.
On Saturday, the victim contacted her actual male friend and discovered that he had not asked her for a loan. Suspecting that she had fallen victim to deception, she promptly reported the incident to the police.
