The Economic and Technological Development Bureau (DSEDT) said in a statement last night that the supply of table salt in the local market was stable, with its stock being sufficient, urging shoppers “to remain rational”.

The statement said that the bureau was “highly” concerned about the supply of salt in Macau, stressing that it has liaised with local suppliers to understand the supply situation of table salt in the market.

The statement noted the city’s table salt storage exceeds 190,000 kg, which was enough for 37 days of consumption by the whole population, adding that local suppliers would continue to import table salt.

According to a raft of posts on social media, a number of local supermarkets are out of stock of table salt.

A male employee of a supermarket in the city centre told The Macau Post Daily late last night that the table salt they had in stock had all been sold, which would only be restocked today.

The employee suggested consumers who need to buy table salt to visit the supermarket early today.

According to the employee, the only salt that the supermarket had on its shelves and in stock last night was sea salt, Himalayan pink rock salt and Japanese imported table salt.

Meanwhile, a statement by the China National Salt Industry Corporation said yesterday that affected by Japan’s nuclear wastewater discharge into the sea, some regional markets in China have recently snapped up table salt, causing a shortage on e-commerce platforms and in supermarkets.
