Contemporary Japanese artist Kumano Umi, aka Umi Kumano, is showcasing 40 of his new works in a solo exhibition titled “Invisible Planet” at the Humarish Club gallery at Lisboeta Macau.

The exhibition, which is Umi’s first solo exhibition in the city, is a Collateral Exhibition for “Art Macao: Macao International Art Biennale 2023”. A recent Humarish Club statement noted that the exhibition is presented in collaboration with “KOTARO NUKAGA”, an art gallery founded in Tokyo in 2018.

The statement said that the exhibition tells the story of an “invisible planet in different spaces” that exists inside of each person, which is invisible to the naked eye.

“In our contemporary society, the boundary between chaotic reality and illusion is gradually becoming blurred. Advances in technology have enabled us [to experience] the cognition to alternate back and forth between reality and fantasy, and to connect with others anywhere”, the statement pointed out.

The statement added: “Today, the borders of countries are becoming more and more meaningless, humans living on the Earth are the planet residents who accept changes in diverse values. In the unsettling experiences of unpredictable natural disasters and wars, humans are dealing with anxiety and loneliness, teetering on the borderline between reality and illusion”.

The exhibition aims to reflect human society in pursuit of happiness through the story of an unknown and mysterious planet.

The exhibition runs through October 20 and is open daily from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. Admission is free. For more details, visit https://www.humarish.com/ and https://www.artmacao.mo/2023/en/
