Macau has recorded this year’s fourth imported case of dengue, the Health Bureau (SSM) announced at the weekend.

According to an SSM statement on Saturday, the patient is a 27-year-old local man who works as a hotel manager. He lives in Kou Weng Building on Rua das Estalagens.

The man travelled to Yunnan province’s Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture on September 1 for a working visit and returned to Macau on Thursday night last week, the statement said.

According to the statement, the patient came down with a fever, eye pain and chills on September 6, when he was still in Yunnan. His fever was gone on September 9 but he then came down with muscle and joint pains.

The statement said that the patient began to develop a rash on his torso and limbs on September 10. According to the statement, he did not seek treatment for his symptoms while in Yunnan, but only sought treatment after returning to Macau where he went to the Inner Harbour Health Centre, which is located near the Ponte 16 casino-hotel, on Friday last week.

At the public health centre, the statement said, the patient had his sample collected for a test. He was diagnosed with dengue fever by the Health Bureau’s Public Health Laboratory on Saturday, the statement said.

The man was in a stable condition at the time of Saturday’s statement, which said that he was resting at his home.

According to the statement, the patient told the Health Bureau that some of his colleagues in the Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture had come down with dengue symptoms, but a friend living with him in Macau had not developed the symptoms.

The statement underlined that the Macau Health Bureau has classified the man’s case as an imported case of dengue fever after considering his travel history and the time of the onset of his symptoms, as well as its laboratory test results.

The Health Bureau has carried out measures to eradicate mosquitoes in the area around the patient’s home.
