A local male student was arrested last Monday for cheating his friend out of about 9,000 patacas, Public Security Police (PSP) Lei Chan Hong said during a regular press conference on Friday.
Lei said that the suspect is in his twenties, surnamed Cheong.
According to Lei, the Public Security Police received a report from Cheong’s friend whose surname and gender were not revealed, saying that upon the request of Cheong, he or she had lent Cheong his or her credit card and provided him with the CVC (Card Verification Code) security code in the middle of May this year, adding that Cheong had spent a total of 18,000 yuan with his or her credit card. The victim, who got acquainted with the suspect in 2021, told the police that he or she had recovered only 10,000 yuan (11, 011 patacas) from Cheong and later lost contact with him, reporting a loss of about 9,000 patacas.
Lei said that the police summoned Cheong to a police station for questioning, during which the suspect admitted to having borrowed the victim’s credit card for purchases because he himself “had no money”. Lei added that the suspect also acknowledged that he “deliberately” defrauded the victim.
Cheong has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a fraud charge.
