5 nabbed for involvement in fake employment

A man from the mainland has been arrested for using sex tapes to blackmail a prostitute that were secretly recorded during their encounters, PSP spokesman Cheong Heon Fan said in a regular press conference yesterday.

The 32-year-old suspect surnamed Gao told the police he’s a salesman. The victim surnamed Zheng is in her twenties.

Meanwhile, two female non-resident workers (NRWs) from the mainland, including Zheng, and three men have been arrested for their involvement in fake employment, Cheong said.

According to Cheong, on Sunday morning, police officers overheard an argument between Zheng and Gao outside a police station in Taipa and intervened by questioning them. Zheng told the police that back in March, she had paid 80,000 yuan (88,000 patacas) to a 41-year-old Hong Kong man surnamed Chen, who acted as an intermediary to apply for a Macau work permit, so that she could work here as a prostitute in disguise.

Zheng met Gao last month and provided him with commercial sex. However, earlier this month, Gao contacted Zheng and informed her that he possessed sex tapes of their encounters. He then began blackmailing her, demanding HK$500 per day and free sex to boot. Under duress, Zheng consented to pay HK$2,300. Additionally, Gao arranged two transactions between Zheng and clients, earning a total of HK$2,000 in “commission”.

Faced with Gao’s ongoing extortion, Zheng decided to confront him in front of the police station on Sunday, according to Cheong.

Under questioning, Gao denied the accusations and refused to cooperate. However, the police discovered a memory card in his possession containing Zheng’s sex tapes, along with identity documents belonging to another mainland woman. Zheng told the police that this woman was another victim of Gao’s who had since returned to the mainland.

As Zheng admitted to engaging in fake employment, police officers summoned Chen, the other non-resident worker surnamed Xu, and the local employers of Zheng and Xu. The employers, surnamed Chan and Choi, own a shop in a Cotai resort hotel.

According to Cheong, Zheng and Xu paid 80,000 yuan and 100,000 yuan respectively to Chen, who acted as a middleman, earlier this year so that Zheng could work as a prostitute in Macau, while Xu told the police that through her fake employment in Macau she wanted to be able to commute “conveniently” between the city and the mainland.

Chan and Choi also admitted to the offence, claiming that they received a total of around 120,000 patacas for the fake employment from the middleman.

The six suspects have been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), Chan, Choi, Chen, Zheng and Xu facing document forgery charges, while Gao faces charges of extortion, living on the earnings of prostitutes and invasion of privacy, according to Cheong.
