A Public Security Police (PSP) officer holding the rank of deputy chief has been arrested for refusing to take a breathalyser after being suspected of drunk driving (DUI), PSP spokesman Cheong Heon Fan said in a regular press conference yesterday.

The suspect surnamed Lei is a 53-year-old male who joined the Public Security Police in 1998.

According to Cheong, on Tuesday night the police received a report about a man wearing a helmet lying on the pavement in Avenida Marginal do Lam Mau. When the officers arrived at the scene, they found a motorcycle near the man, who was reeking of alcohol, with the engine still running.

Lei told the police officers that he had drunk alcohol earlier that day, but he refused to undergo breath and blood alcohol tests.

Cheong said that Lei has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a disobedience charge.

Cheong said that the police expressed regret over the incident and emphasised that they have always attached great importance to staff discipline, adding that they will “strictly” handle the incident.
