Local student athlete Sou Cho Man won the bronze medal in the women’s changquan category of the campus group at the nation’s 1st Student (Youth) Games in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region yesterday, according to a statement by the Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ) yesterday.

Changquan (“long fist”) refers to a group of external (as opposed to internal) martial arts (kung fu) styles from the nation’s north, which emphasises fully extended kicks and striking techniques.

According to the statement, in the women’s changquan category competition, which took place yesterday morning, Sou won the bronze medal with a score of 9.666.

The statement said that in the Hangzhou Asian Games in September, Sou ranked fifth in women’s changquan with a score of 9.753, and won a silver medal in the women’s changquan at the World Combat Games last month.

Sou will also compete in the women’s daoshu today, the statement said.

Daoshu (“sword skill”) is a wushu form where the participant uses a sword as the main element of the routine.

By last night, Macau had won two gold medals – one in the women’s qiangshu (campus group) and the other in the women’s 50m breaststroke (open group), as well as a bronze medal in the women’s changquan.
