Candidates running for a seat in the Legislative Assembly (AL) must sign a statement declaring their agreement with the Macau Basic Law and their allegiance to the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR), apart from not being in any way unqualified to stand for election, according to the latest draft of the Legislative Assembly Election Law amendment bill submitted by the government yesterday.
The legislature’s 2nd Standing Committee President Andrew Chan Chak Mo told reporters about the revised draft after the committee’s closed-door meeting with government officials about the bill.
Chan said that according to the draft, candidates who refuse to sign the declaration, or if their actions or words prove that their statements are false, would be disqualified from running for a seat in the AL.
